What is Digital Signage?

Digital signage is the use of electronic displays (such as LCD, LED, plasma or projection screens) to deliver entertainment, information and/or advertisement in public or private spaces, outside of the home. A digital signage network can be as simple as a stand-alone PC connected to a flat screen monitor or as complex as an interconnected network of thousands of screens each connected to media players with intelligent software and sophisticated back-end computer systems for updating and managing the "signs" played on the screens. Digital signage can include interactive features through touch screen and cell phone technologies. It can include the flexibility to modify each screen or portion of the screen by time of day and by geographic and demographic factors, offering a powerful medium that can reach your out-of-home audience in the most compelling way.

The history of Digital Signage

Digital signage debuted in the 1970s in electronics stores selling televisions and VCRs. It came into being on the back of the popularity of in-store closed circuit television networks based on VCRs. These stores used this new technology to play back recorded advertisements and announcements on TVs for their customers. The advent of modern technology is once again taking digital signage to new levels. Extremely rapid streaming media via the Internet is becoming practically ubiquitous. Ever more sophisticated digital displays are becoming available for low prices. Increasingly inexpensive storage and processing capabilities are also emerging as well. Lastly, the spread of graphics expertise and the sophistication of today's programs have enabled the creation of a new generation of content that is more dazzling and eye-catching than its predecessors. The inception of all these is beginning to allow companies utilizing digital signage to offer a wider and more compelling range of content than ever before.

The power of Digital Signage

In-store digital advertising media lets you share your message with customers while they are in the buy process, sharing specific product info, sales, promotions, discounts, and loyalty programs. You control the messages you want to present to your in-store customers with your own targeted ad messages. Through the Reflect Systems network you also have the ability to present your customers with in-store branding, entertainment, product information, and educational content. All at the point of purchase. In-store digital media and point of purchase digital advertising is an ideal way to stand apart from the competition while staying relevant with your ever more connected customers.

In Store Digital Media and Advertising is Expanding

The in-store digital media is being adopted by more and more companies for a reason. It works. From 2014-2018 forecasters project a cumulative annual growth rate of 12.4%, bringing digital-out-of-home revenues to $15.9 billion by 2018. Companies that work directly with the public have seen the benefits for themselves. Expanding revenues, reinforcing brands, and increasing the customer experience. The success of in-store advertising media has helped to push the evolution of in-store advertising technology.
