Does the A540/A140 show the status of the HDMI connection to a local TV? How can I tell if a TV is working without being in front of it?

Yes. From a telnet or ssh connection to the STB, logged in as root, the following files report information about the local TV connected over HDMI.

/proc/avcore/hdmi_connected (1 = yes, 0 = no)
/proc/avcore/hdmi_sink_product_info (Manufacturer, Model, stuff like that)
/proc/avcore/hdmi_sink_supported_res (All the various resolutions the TV supports, e.g., 1920x1080i_59_94_60Hz_16_9)

These are all text files so you can just cat them out to the screen.

Also, you can gather them using the finstall_ftp remote job entry command described elsewhere in the forums.

Note that this information is useful but it may not tell the complete story. A TV can appear as connected even if it is tuned to another video source (e.g., not the HDMI from the STB). So this command is useful to prove that the HDMI cabling is correct but another method is needed, like the RS232 TV control connection, to force the TV on and to force it to the input which plays the STB display.
