How to Certify SNMP Internet Connectivity

Postby Cilutions Support » Sat Dec 24, 2011 9:25 pm

Is there a way to test SNMP connectivity using, say, a laptop? Something simple to make sure that a remote site is able to send SNMP traffic to the SNMP Proxy over the Internet. This would verify that the router(s) and firewall(s) in between the remote site and the SNMP Proxy are passing traffic successfully. And would offer a method of certifying SNMP connectivity before setting up an STB or if an STB fails to register with the SNMP Proxy Server.

Yes. Contact support@cilutions.com for a Windows program which you can run on a laptop connected to the same subnet where the STB currently is installed or where you plan to install it. You can configure this windows program, named agent.exe, by editing the agent.conf file using, say, notepad as a local editor. Here is an example configuration:

SNMP_V1_2=1
SNMP_V3=1
AGENT_ID=AGENT_SIMULATOR
PROXY_IP=71.178.252.130
PROXY_PORT=7654
PUNCH_FREQUENCY_SEC=10
BOOT_COUNTER=16

Where 71.178.252.130:7654 is the public IP:Port address of the SNMP Proxy on the Internet. This address will be unique to your network. See your network administrator for the correct SNMP Proxy public IP address and Port.

In this example, when you start the agent.exe program, it should register as AGENT_SIMULATOR in the SNMP Proxy. The procedure for reviewing devices in the SNMP Proxy is described in another posting. Your network administrator should be able to confirm connectivity to the SNMP Proxy.

Hit Ctrl-C or close the Command Window to stop agent.exe.
